HEART AND SOUL

Powerful, romantic, and mysterious, the horse is deeply embedded in our cultural and collective psyche.

Here in Aotearoa, the Kaimanawa Wild Horse is one of the few introduced animals we have adopted as our own—protected and nurtured in the wild, rugged lands of the central North Island.

Heart and Soul – A Kaimanawa Story is the culmination of almost twenty years spent photographing and documenting these magnificent horses. At its heart is Porthos, a wild band stallion whose journey from the ranges into domestic life embodies the resilience, loyalty and enduring spirit of the Kaimanawa horse.

Through their lives, both wild and rehomed, the book reveals their gentleness of spirit, warmth of friendship, loyalty to family, joy in life, and inherent resilience.

Published in 2026, first edition sold out, second printing is now available.

The Calendar 2022

Featuring photographs and excerpts from the developing Heart and Soul – A Kaimanawa Story, and introducing Porthos, a six-year-old wild band stallion mustered in 2021, this calendar helped support Porthos’s initial training and journey.

Although the calendar is no longer available for purchase, it can be viewed here.
